CBD Therapy at

Spinal Diagnostics & Regenerative Medicine

What is CBD?

“What is CBD?” is a question our pain management physicians often hear at Spinal Diagnostics & Regenerative Medicine in Colorado Springs. While CBD is still considered new to the market and being studied, it could potentially assist in relieving anxiety, sleeplessness, chronic pain, and much more. Keep on reading to see if CBD therapy could be worth trying at Spinal Diagnostics & Regenerative Medicine.

Cannabis naturally produces more than 80 chemical compounds, called cannabinoids, with the two most commonly known being tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidoil (CBD.) THC is the compound responsible for psychoactive effects and is still illegal in some states. CBD is the other cannabinoid that doesn’t cause a “high” – it is non-psychoactive. Simply put – cannabis plants with high THC content are considered marijuana; while plants with less than 1% THC are considered hemp.

CBD is fully legal in the United States as long as it comes from imported industrial hemp seeds and stalks. When hemp oil is extracted from these plants, they can have a surprising amount of CBD. In pre-clinical studies, done all over the world by renowned scientists and universities, healing potential of CBD for reducing a number of different symptoms such as anxiety, nausea and inflammation, among others has been found effective.

Based on anecdotes and testimony, the most common response to CBD is an overall feeling of calmness and relaxation and benefits range from decreased anxiety, improved range of motion for musculoskeletal conditions, and dissipation of pain symptoms.

There are a multitude of CBD products commercially available.

Can CBD Help You?

While nothing is a guarantee – we all have an endocannabinoid system made of receptors in our brain, spinal cord and nervous systems. While the systems regulation of different biological processes is still being studied, the overall goal is homeostasis – bringing that area of the body to a neutral state. Because of the results our pain management physicians have seen at Spinal Diagnostics & Regenerative Medicine, we believe this therapy has truly been beneficial to many of our patients.

There are two primary receptors making up this system: CB1 and CB2. CBD and other cannabinoids work by interacting with these receptors by modulating a variety of processes in our body, including motor learning, appetite and pain sensation.

Our bodies actually produce CB1 or endo-cannabinoids in compounds like anandamide, which is named after a Sanskrit word meaning “joy, bliss, and delight.” CB2 is found in cannabis and is called phyto-cannabinoids.

CBD oil shows a lot of potential for pain relief with some evidence suggesting it can be used to help manage chronic pain. The oil is especially promising due to its lack of intoxicating effects and a lower potential for side effects that are found with many other pain medications.

It is important to us that you find a balanced pain regimen that leverages many different mechanisms of action to limit side effects from any one medication.  Ask a physician at Spinal Diagnostics & Regenerative Medicine if CBD therapy is right for you.  We encourage you to do your own research with the understanding that many CBD products are not independently purity tested or quality controlled.  We would be happy to discuss this treatment modality with you during your clinic visit.
